While news about the two fire tragedies, first in a supermarket of Nairobi, and the in Rift Valley,  reach us via the media and by email, we also hear about the Social Forum event, which took place in Kariobangi (Nairobi):

This year the World Social Forum will be taking place in Belem Brazil from 27 January to 1 February. As away of showing solidarity with the thousands of participants who will be attending the event, youths from Kariobangi Parish that was part of Nairobi 2007 World social forum have organized different activities in preparation to the global event.

On 10 January 2009, the youths organized an environmental clean up in Korogocho slum where the residents are faced with environmental hazards that has affected thousand of people and claimed many life.

There was a large turn out of community members and young people who joined there effort to make Korogocho a cleaner and safer place.

With an aim of creating awareness on the importance of conserving the environment, the event also aimed at mobilizing the community to participate in the coming social forum and other activities scheduled to take place in Kariobangi, Korogocho slums.

Other activities to take place include peaceful demonstration about human rights issues, Human rights workshop and seminar, Cultural performances and others.
