Roundtable: EASTERN EUROPE AND THE GLOBAL SOUTH

March 27, 4 pm – 6:30 pm, Salle: G108

Convened by: EL TALLER INTERNATIONAL

After two decades of West-oriented capitalist reforms, the former socialist bloc in Eastern Europe has entered in the past years a process of political change from bottom-up. Mass popular movements rose from 2010 in Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and Romania, leading in the latter to the demise of the neoliberal government. The government in Bulgaria fell to a similar demise most recently, after protests flared throughout the country. Throughout the former socialist bloc one can hear different voices protesting, reclaiming dignity and asking for social justice amidst disenchantment with the neoliberal transition and the European promises. There are also new initiatives for regional internationalization. The direction taken by these changes is by no means predetermined, but an autonomous reorientation of Eastern Europe could have important consequences on the global transition to another world. We invite you to a much needed and timely open discussion in which one can build solidarity and relate the events in Eastern Europe to the rise of Global South, in order to understand the shared problems, the decolonizing options and to seize the opportunity of building alliances and collaborations.
