The People’s Health Movement (PHM) and Oxfam-France call for actions towards democratizing global health governance, realizing equitable and universal health care systems, and addressing social determinants of health.

After inspiring peoples across the world by initiating the Arab Spring, social movements and activists across the world have chosen Tunisia to host the 2013 edition of the World Social Forum (WSF).

Tens of thousands of activists will gather in Tunis to defend people’s ‘Dignity’ from 26th – 30th March 2013.

During the WSF 2013, the PHM jointly with Oxfam-France is organizing three workshops.

Power Structures for Health Governance We will discuss:

•     The nature of the current model of health governance,

•     The role of different actors (power structure) and the pathways through which those actors shape/influence the health decision at different levels.

•     People’s power and resistance: The role of social movements and civil society networks in reshaping the current model of health governance for people’s interest.

We will focus on the role of multinational corporates and international monetary organizations in shaping the health governance at national and global levels. It will also address the trials of International Monetary Fund (IMF) to continue the implementation of its impoverishing policies in the Arab Spring countries (the case of Tunisia and Egypt). The program will include:

•     A key-note speech which will provide a brief analysis to the power structures that control the health governance;
•     Case studies (two cases) from  different regions
•     Open discussion and commitments to future actions

Health system strengthening and universal health coverage We will discuss:

•     Introduction to different models of health systems;
•     Factors that shape/influence the development of health systems and role of different actors;
•     Role of civil society networks and social movements in the realization of equitable universal health coverage.

  We will focus on the structural determinants emerging from the political and economic context on the national and global levels.

The program will include:

•     A key-note speech which will provide an introduction to the principles of universal health coverage;
•     Case studies (two cases) from  different regions discussing different models and challenges towards universal health coverage;
•     Open discussion and commitments to future actions

Political, economic and social determinants of people's health We will discuss:

•     The major determinants that shape and affect people's health;
•     The role of social movements and networks in addressing those determinants.

We will focus on the structural determinants emerging from the political and economic context on the national and global levels.

The program will include:

•     A key-note speech which will discuss how political and economic context shape people’s health;
•     Case studies (two cases) from  different regions
•     Open discussion and commitments to future actions
