The fight against a repressive regime can result in the challenge of retaining the features of the repressive regime through the liberators who are well versed in what they ought to replace. Civil rights movements are supposed to articulate different postulates by bringing in a counter opinion. A counter opinion is built through education because education provides dignity, a means of articulation, self-respect and empowerment to speak out.

Education: Strengthens the capacity of civil society as it brings diversity. Thus, it is important to mainstream education for a long-term.

There are many challenges, however. Authoritarian regimes use education to continue to perpetuate the system. Thus, education ought to be liberalized to permit curiosity.

The other challenge is that at times participation in civil society, especially in Africa can only be achieved after achieving basic rights such as food, water, shelter, etc.

Some civil society organizations are not democratic themselves and political leaders in Africa, very rightly at times, ask whether civil societies are democratic. Many civil society organizations have been accused of corruption and lack of accountability.

Dakahumas Youth Initiative was formed in 2004 by a collaboration of up coming artists groups from Dandora Kariobangi, Huruma, Mathare estates. The group use participatory education theatre to sensitize the community on issues such as rape, HIV testing, child abuse, drug abuse and early pregnancy.

The organisation does its work through the following programmes:

However, Dakahuma believes in self reliance towards realizing its goals and objectives by offering services such as design and print information, education and communication material, consultancy services in the field of drugs and substance abuse, etc.

Undugu Society of Kenya is one of the pioneer organizations in sub-saharan Africa which deals with the rehabiltation of street kids.

It was founded in 1973 by a dutch catholic priest Lat Father arnold Grol after observing a growing phenomenon of street children in Nairobi.

The non-formal education and informal skills training is one of the programmes of the Undugu society of Kenya whose aim is to reach out to the excluded in the society by providing alternative form of education and training to younger stars who have been excluded from mainstream education and traing programmes.

Non-formal Education is an organised cativity that operates outside the formal educationn programme.It's traget group are children and youth between the ages of 6-17 yrs.

The programme offers technical and academic subjects.

The flower industry is a key sector in the economy of Columbia employing over 90000 people mostly women, displaced by war and who live below the poverty line.

The workers are employed through sub-contactors . This arrangement favours employers at the expense of the workers. The workers work for long hours sometimes upto 18 hours a day. Miscarriages are common and the workers frequently suffer from work related illnesses as a result of repeated exposure to pesticides already banned in other countries.

There is a high level of discrimination against women. Sometimes they are asked to sterilise themselves before being given work.

Another casualty is the environment because flower production uses a great deal of water that is got from underground.

Although there are trade unions that are supposed to advocate for the rights of the workers, the government of Columbia and the companies continue to restrict and persecute leaders and members of the trade unions sometimes even sacking them.

Trade unions need to provide education to workers not only to know and demand for their rights but also to know what is happening internationally.

Workers need to unite and fight for emacipation from exploitative employers.

More power within the structure of the trade unions should be given to the grass roots members.
