Summary of Issues ● Housing is a humna right,It is not a commodity to be found in the market. ● Housing to eradicate poverty ● Adequate housing will not be possible without subsidising ● The right to housing is a prerequisite to the fulfilment of several human rights. ● Lack of adquate housing has a significant impact on poor people's livelihoods affecting their health,social poltical and economic outcomes ● Housing is a global concern ● ● Housing is a commodity and housing defiat is a reuslt of the imbalances between the supply and the demand ● ● The housing deficit is a result of unjust distribution of weather and its solution is a social responsibility ● ● Adequate housing helps to reduce violence,crime and insercuity ● ● Sercuity of tenure is another key element in the full and progressive realistion of housing right.Secure tenure means the sercuity of occupation,which does not necessarily imply land ownership ● A vast majority of poor families in developing countries lack sercuity of tenure.consquences of insecure are 1. Inhibition of investment in housing 2. Hinderances for good governace 3. Undermining of long term planning 4. Distortion of prices of land and services 5. Reinforcement of poverty and social exclusion 6. Most negative impacts on women and children Housing co-operatives Housing-co-operatives play an important role in promoting sustainable human housing

Co-operatives are self help organisations having a specific structure and following a special philisopy expressed in co-operative valves and principles

Some co-operatives in housing include Land development co-operatives Building construction co-operatives providing serviced sites.core houses or complete houses for their members Self-construction co-operatives where members build their own houses Home ownership co-operatives Tenants co-operatives Estate managemnt co-operatives

Housing co-operative belong to the social economy sector, a part of civil society

The free market mechansim in developing countries are not solving even basic housing needs and most people from the lower middle class cannot afford adequate housing,not to mention low-income groups or people in poverty.

Recommendations In order to realise the right to housing for all a public subsidy system is necessary,specifically targetting the poor The subsidy systems must be seen as right not as a favour

It is government's responsbility to realise human rights therefore there should be policies and legal frameworks to target the poor.

Land and secure tenure.consquencesefforts should be aimed at facilitating access to land and security of the tenure.

Public subsidy system There should be activities aimed at achieving a transparent and stable public susidy system targeting the poor

Access of finance Government should encourage co-operatives organisation savings and credit grouos and organisations and working methods such as self-construction,self management and mutual aid as means to lower costs and achieve sustainabiltiy

Working methods such as self-help8self construction,or mutual aid and self management) and savings should be encouraged and given priority in there efforts to solve housing problems Rural urban migration Government has refused to provide housing to the people Eviction-informed housing sprout Initiatives for low income housing groups are not supported by the governments,but they have been trying.Some groups have put up structures to provide housing problems
