Title: Measures of a Just World
Name of organiser: Human Dignity and Human rights Caucus (HDHR)
Number of Participants: Over 1000
Key speakers: Shirin Ebadi, Mary Robinson, Nora de Cortinas
Summary of key issues covered:
Dignity is an inherent human right that must be enjoyed by all. That is in the search for a just world, human rights activists need to focus their attention on 3 key areas:
- Being clever (strategic) on where efforts and connections are to be concentrated. There is a need to go beyond working only with those who agree with us to those who do not agree with us so they too can be convinced.
- That for too long the human rights debate has been hanging at the intellectual level and now is the time to time for it to come down to the emotional level.
- It is time for an inclusive democracy where the rights of women and children are respected right from the family level, to the community level and international leadership levels.
Recommendations from activity Everyone counts and everyone must be involved in the search for the dignity of all human beings.
